Tea is one of the most popular and affordable beverages in the world, and many people are still finding ways to make it their own.
But with so many varieties of teas, and even some that have been discontinued due to health concerns, what exactly is tea and what is it good for?
We sat down with three experts to find out.
Dr. Michael Oakes, a clinical nutritionist and author of The Tea Party Cookbook, said that while the coffee and tea drinks people are using have different levels of caffeine, the basic idea is the same.
“There are lots of different things that we can do with caffeine,” Oakes told Al Jazeera.
“If you want to drink coffee and make a tea, you can add water and stir in the coffee.
If you want a tea with a lot of caffeine it might be better to brew it in the morning and mix in the milk, tea, coffee.”
But when you add it to a cup of tea and you want it to taste really strong, that’s where the coffee comes in.
“The black tea, tea with sugar, tea that has cocoa, tea made with coffee, the idea is to have the black, the strong, the bitter taste that’s associated with coffee and black tea.”
In the morning you need to drink your tea at the same time that you’re preparing the rest of the meal.
“Dr. Sarah Kress, a cardiologist, and co-founder of the Kress Institute for Cardiovascular Research, told Al Jazeera that the tea industry needs to adapt.”
I think it’s time for the tea sector to be more proactive in making it more accessible and to make the industry more accessible to more people,” she said.”
It’s a lot harder for the coffee industry to get people to try their coffee and drink their tea, which is a real challenge for us.
“We need to make more tea available in the United States and globally, and that includes our tea companies.”
Dr Oakes also told Al JAEG that tea can be an effective supplement for people who are sensitive to caffeine.
“You’re not drinking a whole lot of tea but you can actually have tea that is really low in caffeine, and it is effective at lowering your blood pressure,” he said.
Kress also told us that tea is a good source of antioxidants, as well as protein, vitamins, minerals and fats.
“Tea is the best plant-based beverage because it contains protein, carbohydrates and vitamins,” she added.
Kahane Shaffer, an associate professor of health nutrition and dietetics at the University of California, San Francisco, told us tea is very high in antioxidants.
“For many people it’s the best drink for lowering blood pressure, because it has antioxidants in it, like ascorbic acid,” she told AlJazeera.
“So it has a lot going for it.”
