The chemical compounds known as terpenes, which include those from the tea tree, can be used to protect the skin from damage by sunlight, which can lead to sunburn and even cancer.
They also help the body fight inflammation, helping to prevent skin cancers.
“Teyng tea has been used for thousands of years in China and South Korea and has been widely used to treat the common cold, psoriasis, acne, and more,” said Dr Elizabeth Linton, a consultant dermatologist from the University of Edinburgh in the UK.
“The tea tree oils are an excellent option for people with oily skin because they have antioxidant properties which help protect the surface of the skin against free radicals.”
Tea tree oils can also help reduce inflammation in the skin, helping reduce the appearance of redness and acne, says Dr Linton.
“A study found that a 1.5mg tea tree extract reduced skin sensitivity to sunlight by 35% and the oil was able to reduce the inflammatory process by nearly 50% in some people,” she said.
But the research also found that tea tree-based products were not as effective as other products on reducing the appearance or severity of acne.
“There’s a lack of data on the use of tea tree and tea tree extracts in dermatology,” Dr Lenton said.
“But tea tree can be a great oil and is often used in combination with other treatments, and it’s a good alternative to the standard acne treatment that involves using a cream or toner.”
Tea tree oils may also be beneficial for people suffering from eczema, rashes, or psorias.
“This oil also has some anti-aging properties that can reduce wrinkles, dark spots and hyperpigmentation, among other skin benefits.” “
Tea tree oil has been shown to reduce skin sensitivity and increase the skin’s natural protective barrier to the sun,” said the AA-DMD, which recommends that people avoid using the tea to treat skin problems.
“This oil also has some anti-aging properties that can reduce wrinkles, dark spots and hyperpigmentation, among other skin benefits.”
For a skin care product that is designed to protect your skin, look for products that contain tea tree.
But for more experienced skincare practitioners, Dr Linder recommends the use only one tea tree essential oil per use.
“It is important to be careful when using tea tree for the first time because you may find that your skin feels slightly dry and not oily,” she advises.
“For most people, tea tree should be used with a light, dry moisturiser and not a heavy moisturiser.”
